Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood (including the Streeterville and Mag Mile neighborhoods) is true to its moniker – Perhaps the finest Chicago luxury real estate is located there. Chicago’s Gold Coast is hands-down the wealthiest neighborhood in the city.
The Gold Coast neighborhood boundaries extend to North Ave. on the north, Chicago Ave. on the south, Clark on the west and The Lake on the east.
In the late 1800s the area was known as the Astor Street district and ran from North Ave. to Division Street. In fact, Rubloff Residential Properties sold the most expensive single family home to date – A luxurious mansion that sits on Astor St. The names of former Gold Coast residents reads like a who’s who of Chicago – include the icons Potter Palmer, Marshall Field, Kenneth Goodman, Joseph Medill, Cyrus McCormick and Levi Leiter.
In Chicago’s Gold Coast you will find affordable yet luxurious studio to three bedroom condos in modern highrises along the lake, as well as pristine brownstones and mansions as you move inward from The Lake.
Within the Gold Coast you will find Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood, a residential pocket located between Michigan Ave. and the lake – Urban living at its most sophisticated. Luxurious offices are everywhere – A high concentration of the city's major media firms and advertising agencies are located along Michigan Ave. You will also find the most desirable shops (Niketown, The Disney Store, Sak’s 5th Ave., Burberry’s ), top rated restaurants and world class theaters are mere steps away. New and vintage high-rise and mid-rise condominiums or co-ops are the prevalent forms of housing. The Museum of Contemporary Art and Northwestern University’s downtown campus and medical center are famous residents here.

Higher education is found in Chicago’s Gold Coast with Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, School of Continuing Studies, and School of Law, and of course Loyola’s watertower campus. You will also find two architecturally and historically significant houses of worship in the Gold Coast – Holy Name Cathedral and 4th Presbyterian Church. In addition, the historical old water tower and pumping station (two of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871) are location on Michigan Avenue just north of Chicago.
Many Gold Coast residents live in the more modestly priced condos in “Sandburg Village” - An Arthur Rubloff and Co. development from the 1960s that is still thriving today. Running from North to Division and Dearborn to LaSalle, Sandburg Village helped spearhead neighborhood rejuvenation in Chicago’s Gold Coast many years ago.
In addition to the Chicago public schools, renowned private and parochial schools in the area offer an alternative to area residents. Private elementary schools include Montessori School Near-North. Exclusive private high schools include the Latin School of Chicago, Francis Parker School, Quigley Seminary North and St. Ignatius College Prep.
Michigan Avenue’s “Magnificent Mile” is among the most elite retail districts in the nation. The “Mile” features such exclusive shops as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman-Marcus, Macy's, and Bloomingdale’s. Water Tower Place is an elaborate eight floor indoor Mall featuring more than 120 specialty shops, several restaurants and seven cinemas. Located adjacent to the Ritz Carlton Hotel, shoppers might stop for high tea in the afternoon.
The Lakefront provides the setting for an endless array of activities, from swimming and boating to bike trails and jogging paths. Entertainment is just a short ride away. The Lincoln Park Zoo, the Art Institute, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium are facilities that promote fun and learning for all ages. The nightlife in Chicago is extravagant with clubs open until the early morning hours. Music options run the gamut from rock to rap and blues to jazz. Dining alternatives range from elegant courses at Charlie Trotter's to informal novelty at Ed Debevic’s. Regardless of the evening preference, Chicago’s collection of fine restaurants, city attractions, clubs and recreational activities provide endless opportunities for everyone.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Streeterville is associated with Northwestern University. The 723-bed facility employs over 1,000 attending and resident medical professionals. This hospital is a designated trauma center for emergency care.
All major denominations are represented throughout the metropolitan area.
Travel is easy with the elaborate system of expressways and public transportation. Taxis, buses, the subway and elevated trains make transportation convenient within the city and to and from the surrounding suburbs. A direct rail line to O’Hare International Airport stops in the area. The Edens, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Stevenson, and Dan Ryan Expressways link the area with the rest of the city and suburbs.
